Lighthouse

Thanks for the support after my last post - it’s still hot, but my system seems to have adapted as best as it can (it takes a little longer each year, sigh…) and the stitching speed has improved. So the completion of block 1 of Shores spilled into July by just a single day. I just won’t stop saying how much I love this project, it’s a real pleasure to work on, and I can’t wait to start the next block (#3, with the mermaid) later this month.

Grazie per la solidarietà negli ultimi commenti - nonostante faccia ancora molto caldo, il mio organismo sembra essersi adattato per quanto ci riesce (ogni anno ci mette un po’ più di tempo, uff…) e le crocette ora vanno più veloci. Così il completamento di questo quadrato di Shores ha tracimato di un solo giorno nel mese di luglio. Non mi stanco di ripetere quanto mi piaccia questo lavoro, è veramente gradevole eseguirlo, e non vedo l’ora di cominciare il prossimo quadrato (quello con la sirena) più avanti questo mese.

Too hot!

After an untypically rainy late spring, summer has truly landed in this part of the world and sent temperatures soaring - and my stitching efficiency plummeting. This is all I’ve managed of this month’s block of Shores so far, and I doubt I’ll complete it by the end of the June. And, quite honestly, I really don’t even care that much - my priority now is to try to stay as cool as possible, and to find ways to decrease the semi-permanent throbbing in my head caused by the heat. Those rocks look like a nice cool place…

Dopo tutta la pioggia della tarda primavera, è scoppiata l’estate, che non solo ha fatto alzare mostrosuamente le temperature, ma anche precipitare la mia voglia di crocettare. Questo è tutto quello che sono riuscita a fare questo mese su Shores, e dubito che riuscirò a finire questo quadrato per la fine di giugno. E francamente, non riesce neanche ad importarmi molto - la mia priorità adesso è stare il più possibile al fresco, e fare di tutto per sedare la cefalea semi-permanente causata dal caldo. Quegli scogli hanno l’aria di essere un posto così fresco…

Spots on Kathleen

Indigo Rose’s Kathleen came out this weekend (this is what she looked like). Now I’ve completed the central panel, and stitched the spots above and below it. The different stitches were great fun and very fast to complete - designer Catherine Strickler is a master in scattering just the right amount of them in her samplers to keep up the stitcher’s interest without tiring. I’ve also been stitching Shores of Hawk Run Hollow, but that’s for another day.

Nel fine-settimana ho tirato fuori Kathleen di Indigo Rose (vedere qui dove ero rimasta). Adesso ho finito la sezione centrale e i motivi che la circondano sopra e sotto. Mi sono molto divertita ad eseguire tutti i diversi tipi di punti a fili contati, e non c’è voluto neanche molto tempo - la disegnatrice Catherine Strickler è davvero maestra nell’inserirne la quantità giusta nei suoi schemi, in modo da mantenere l’interesse di chi li ricama, senza stancare. Ho anche continuato Shores of Hawk Run Hollow, ma ne parleremo un’altra volta.

Half done

With the boarding house finished, the Village is half built, hooray! That block took much less to complete than I thought when I wrote the last post. Even on this high count, this design is so easy to stitch that it just flies along - if only I could say the same of some other projects… Now I’ve picked up Shores again, and it will be nice to be stitching with blues for a while.

Adesso che la pensione è finita, sono arrivata a metà del Village, evviva! C’è voluto molto meno di quanto pensassi a completare questo quadrato. Anche su questo lino fittissimo, lo schema è così facile che va via bello veloce - se solo si potesse dire lo stesso di altri lavori… Adesso sono tornata a Shores, e devo dire che mi fa piacere crocettare di nuovo in celeste per un po’.

Must get cracking

Not the best of pictures, but I was in a bit of a rush - just to show the present status of block 4 in Village of Hawk Run Hollow. If I want to finish this and stitch a new block on Shores before the end of the month I’ll have to speed up a bit. It’s not my favourite block, because it has too many browns, russets, and grays for my taste, but once the grass is done I’ll probably love it much more.

Non è una gran foto, ma avevo fretta - giusto per far vedere a che punto sono con il quarto quadrato di Village of Hawk Run Hollow. Se voglio finirlo e anche fare un quadrato di Shores prima della fine del mese dovrò accelerare un po’. Non è la mia parte preferita dello schema, perché per i miei gusti ci sono troppi marroni, rossicci e grigi, ma una volta fatta l’erba penso che mi piacerà di più.

A start, and my new scissors

Many thanks for all the lovely comments on Dead Man’s Chess! So now I’ve started Flowers for Sarah by Blackbird Designs – just a tiny start for the moment. I’m using 32ct vintage country mocha Belfast linen, with the charted Crescent Colours. The flowery fabric in the background is a possible choice of backing for the final sewing roll.

E così adesso ho cominciato Flowers for Sarah di Blackbird Designs – solo un piccolo inizio per il momento, usando un lino Belfast sfumato a 13 fili/cm e i fili Crescent Colours suggeriti nello schema. La stoffa a fiorellini che fa da sfondo è una possibile scelta per foderare la trousse che sarà il prodotto finale.

Also featuring in the photograph are my newest scissors. Aren’t they pretty? I got bitten by the scissor-collecting bug some time ago, and when I found these on a French site recently, I couldn’t resist them. They’re French-made. Horribly expensive. Awesome quality. And to my horror, the first pair which the nice French people sent me was stolen from the box before reaching me (to avoid writing obscenities, I will refrain from posting my opinion on whoever did this). Fortunately the package was insured, so after some running about by yours truly, to file claims with the Police and with the mail service, the nice French people quickly sent me a replacement. This time the package was completely wrapped up in tape, much like an Egyptian mummy, so that my Swiss Army knife had a field day macheting a way to its contents, before I could at last fondle my lovely new scissors. I seriously doubt that the thief is a needleworker (the box was unmarked, and they were probably thinking electronics, or something kinky) so goodness only knows what became of the first pair – sad, really.

Nella foto ci sono anche le mie forbicine più nuove. Belle, vero? Mi è venuta la mania di collezionarle, tempo fa, e quando su un sito francese ho trovato queste, non ho resistito. Sono fabbricate in Francia. Costosissime. Di ottima qualità. E - orrore! – le prime che i gentili francesi mi hanno spedito sono state rubate dal pacchetto prima che mi arrivasse (per decenza, non renderò pubblica la mia opinione su chiunque sia stato a farlo). Per fortuna il pacco era assicurato, così dopo che ho speso una mattinata fra denuncia alla Polizia Postale e reclamo alle Poste, i gentili francesi hanno rapidamente effettuato una nuova spedizione. Stavolta la scatola era completamente avvolta in nastro da imballaggio, stile mummia egiziana, il che ha richiesto il drastico intervento del mio coltellino svizzero per raggiungere il contenuto – e finalmente sono riuscita ad accarezzare affettuosamente le mie favolose forbicine nuove. Dubito fortemente che il ladro sia una persona dedita al ricamo (la scatola non indicava provenienza o contenuto, probabilmente si aspettava qualcosa di elettronico o qualche oggetto, ehm, esotico…), e chissà quindi quale destino avranno avuto le prime forbici – che tristezza però.

Finished!

Yesssss! After 355 days, Dead Man’s Chess is finished, and I’m really pleased with it. This was great fun. Technical details: stitched on 32ct raw Belfast linen from Zweigart, using the DMC key, single strand. I intend to stitch other designs by Plum Street Samplers eventually - but first, to reward myself for finishing this huge project, I want to stitch something by Blackbird Designs. Their charts are smaller, and I’m stashing so many of them that if I don’t make a dent in the pile soon it will become embarassing. It will probably be Flowers for Sarah, from their latest book.

Evviva! Dopo 355 giorni, ho finito Dead Man’s Chess, e mi piace moltissimo. È stato anche molto gradevole da eseguire. Dettagli tecnici: lino naturale Belfast a 13 fili/cm della Zweigart, colori DMC a filo singolo. Ho intenzione di eseguire altri schemi di Plum Street Samplers prima o poi - ma per premiarmi di aver finito questo lavoro enorme, voglio innanzitutto fare qualcosa di Blackbird Designs. I loro schemi sono meno impegnativi, e ne sto accumulando talmente tanti che se non comincio presto ad abbassarne la pila diventerà imbarazzante. Probabilmente comincerò Flowers for Sarah, dal loro ultimo libro.

Not much left, really

This is part of a project which I started a long time ago (apologies for the abysmal pressing). It’s called Ghoulies & Ghosties, and it was an on-line class offered by Brightneedle, which I’ve already mentioned as one of my favourite designing companies. The whole project can be seen on Elegant Stitch’s class page (scroll down to find it). These two bits are the front and back of the largest piece, the etui. I haven’t really dedicated long stretches of time to stitching this, just the odd session now and then, and I’ve only recently realized: hey, it’s not that far from being finished! What’s still missing? The pocket to attach on the back, and the needlebook (inside and outside). Plus a tiny little fob which was sent as a class bonus. Not much really, they’re all small pieces and the stitching could be finished in a fairly short time. So I’d better do something about this… After which comes the assembling, an entirely different matter…

Questa è parte di un lavoro che ho iniziato parecchio tempo fa (mi scuso per la pessima stiratura). Si chiama Ghoulies & Ghosties, ed era un corso on-line di Brightneedle, che ho già citato come una delle mie linee di schemi preferite. Il lavoro completo si può vedere sulla pagina web dei corsi di Elegant Stitch (scorrere verso il basso). Questi due pezzi sono fronte e retro del componente più grande del lavoro, la pochette. Non ho dedicato interi periodi lunghi a ricamarli, solo una sessione ogni tanto, e improvvisamente mi sono resa conto che, guarda un po’, non è che manchi molto a finire! Ci sono da ricamare ancora la taschina da applicare sul retro, il porta-aghi (interno ed esterno) e un piccolo pendaglino da forbici aggiunto alla fine del corso come sorpresina finale. Tutti pezzi piccoli, e potrei finirli in tempi abbastanza brevi. Sarà meglio che torni a dedicare una sessione ogni tanto a questo lavoro… poi bisognerà passare al montaggio, che è tutta un’altra storia…

Under the sea

There, another block finished on Shores of Hawk Run Hollow - it adds a nice splash of colour to the project. Next up will be the lighthouse, but first I’ll do another block on Village of HRH

Eccoci qua, finito un altro quadrato in Shores of Hawk Run Hollow - aggiunge un bel tocco di colore all’insieme. Il prossimo sarà il paesaggio con il faro, ma prima tornerò al Village of HRH.

No vacancy

Sorry, the graveyard is full, new ghouls and ghosts will have to go and haunt elsewhere. Phew, the last over-1 stitching in the last gravestone is done - and now the end is really in sight. I foresee that DMC 926 will be infesting my dreams for quite a while, but at least it’s a colour I like.

Ci dispiace, ma i posti al cimitero sono esauriti: i nuovi spiriti e fantasmi dovranno portare altrove le proprie attività spettrali. Finalmente! Ho finito le ultime crocette su 1 filo nell’ultima lapide, e adesso si sente veramente il profumo del traguardo. Prevedo che per un po’ il DMC 926 infesterà pesantemente i miei sogni notturni, ma almeno è un colore che mi piace…
